HELP! First graders at Sierra Bonita made a gingerbread man today and he ran away! He's about one foot tall, has peppermint eyes, a brown m&m nose, and red and green gumdrop buttons. He goes by the name of Gingy. If you have any ideas on his whereabouts, please send him back to us. THANK YOU!
The 3rd grade recently completed research projects. Some of them are on countries, animals or other topics. Mrs. Christensen's class all did country reports and have been presenting them for the class and parents. They covered things like daily life, capitals, population, and what the country looks like. They have had fun while learning a lot about our world. They made posters, typed up their reports, and presented them in front of the class. Some students brought in items, money, and food from that country. It was a lot of fun.
On December 2nd, second graders from Sierra Bonita had the opportunity to go to Christmas Around the World at BYU. We saw dances from many different cultures. Among our favorites were the bottle dance from Israel, a scarf dance from Mexico, and the river dance from Ireland. It was fun to see talented dancers portray the holiday traditions of different cultures from all around the world
In Miss Mathew's Second Grade class they are doing a special project called Show and Teach. Each student signed up for a time where they got to be the teacher. To go along with their unit about steps in a process, each student was assigned to think of something they would like to teach the class how to do. Using the steps in a process format, they were then given a few minutes on their assigned day to teach the class. So far they have learned how to make Kool-Aid, paper origami flow
On November 22, Sierra Bonita students showed their best impression of a turkey gobble in hopes to win a turkey for Thanksgiving Dinner during the Turkey Gobbling Assembly. Each class chose their best gobbler to compete for the grade level turkey in front of the entire school. The world renowned judges did a wonderful job at picking the best gobblers to win the prize! We had a great time not only hearing turkey impressions, but the judges required some gobblers to act like turkeys to decide the winner of some grade levels. Even the faculty had a chance to show their best gobbles!
Sierra Bonita 4th graders were entertained last week by mountain man, Scott “Grizzly” Sorensen. Dressed in buckskin clothing, Scott demonstrated the use of various tools, traps and weapons used by the mountain men and Native Americans of the 1800s. Mr. Sorensen told the students stories of legendary mountain men such as Jedediah Smith, Jim Bridger, Kit Carson. The students were introduced to the early methods of trapping, tanning, muzzle loading, and the telling of tall tales.
Fablehaven author Brandon Mull recently visited the 3rd-6th grade students at Sierra Bonita Elementary. He began his visit by telling about his journey in becoming a writer and introduced his books. Some of the students then got to participate in a game of creating an imaginary world. The focus of the presentation was using your imagination. Brandon shared pictures of places he has visited because of his writing/imagination. They were given ideas on how to improve their writing and encouraged to read.
Sierra Bonita’s fourth grade students participated in a water presentation this week. The purpose of the presentation was to review the water cycle and learn about Utah’s watershed area. The students were also taught about their role in water conservation and about the different sources of pollution that negatively affect our resources. The students were able to actively participate during the presentation and came away with a lot of new information.
First grade students from Sierra Bonita Elementary School enjoyed the morning at Scera Theater’s production of “How I Became a Pirate” at the end of October 2011. During the play they enjoyed the exuberant pirates and theatrical singing and story line. Some of their favorite characters were Captain Braid Beard and Sharktooth. The story started with a boy that went on an adventure with a small group of pirates. While on the ship he learned how to act like a pirate, but decided after many adventures that a life of piracy was not the life for him.
On October 24, 2011 the Sierra Bonita Kindergarten students had the opportunity to visit Pumpkinland. While at Pumpkinland the students were able to see many different types of pumpkins, gourds, and squash. Some liked the white pumpkins or the funny green, bumpy squash and others preferred the traditional orange pumpkin. They were able to see all sizes of pumpkins growing in Farmer Grant’s pumpkin patch. Students also enjoyed a corn maze that had a secret room (some of them found it and some didn’t!). During our ti
