Student council members from Sierra Bonita Elementary spent the day at Utah’s State Capitol. Students enjoyed a tour of the Capitol and a meeting with Senator Deidre Henderson.  Henderson discussed current bills, answered questions, and in preparation for the legislative session encouraged students to text her during the proceeding with any additional questions.

Students also had an opportunity to meet with the Education Advisor, Mrs. Tami Pyfer, who showed them around the Governor’s office.

Principal Mike Larsen emphasized the value of such field trips crediting Mr. Myles Peterson and Miss McKell Cope, the sixth grade teachers and student council advisors, for providing leadership rich opportunities.

Miss Cope said “This is such a great experience for students to see first-hand how laws are made. It showed these students leadership in action while strengthening their leadership skills. I want all of my students to see the importance of having a voice.”

Mr. Peterson considers this Capitol field trip a great opportunity for students to see how the state is governed. Peterson said “providing students with these types of authentic learning opportunities will create effective leaders throughout our school and into the future. I am proud of Sierra Bonita’s student council members.”
