The Great Utah Shake Out - April 16, 2020

Submitted by tiffany.manwaring on Fri, 04/03/2020 - 13:00

The Great Utah Shake Out Earthquake Drill is scheduled for April 16, 2020. The State is encouraging students and their families to participate in a home earthquake drill.  If participating in this drill is possible to incorporate into the curriculum teachers are preparing for students, I have attached a couple of handouts to help with instruction.  More information can be found at www.shakeout.org/utah.  It may be fun for the students to take pictures of their family holding a drill.  I would love to see the photos. Thank you for all you do and please stay healthy and safe.     #sierrabonita #humansofsierrabonita #sierrabonitabears #nebohero #NeboSchoolDistrict #studentsuccess #empowerstudents #engagestudents #focusonstudents #loveUTpublicschools #utpol #uted

Parents,

With the news of a Soft Closure until May 1st, we wanted to still have Friday's be our school spirit day each week.  This week, Friday the 27th, we will be driving through the neighborhoods of our school community.  We would love to have as many students who want to participate, come out on their porch in their school shirt and wave and say hello as we pass by.  We will not be stopping as we are keeping our social distance, but we just wanted to see all of our students faces to brighten our day.  We will have a police escort, so listen for the siren as it nears your home and come out to see us.  We will start in the Maple Highlands neighborhood at 10:30 and we will drive down each street until we are done.  The siren will be your indicator that we are close.  Thanks for all you have done and all you will continue to do in supporting your students and our school community.

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Like you, we are just learning that Governor Gary R. Herbert, State Superintendent Syd Dickson, and the Utah State Board of Education “announced today that Utah’s K-12 public schools will extend their dismissal [soft closure] through Friday, May 1st.”  Their press release further stated that they will “continue to evaluate the situation to make a determination about the remaining school year” and that:

Gov. Herbert expressed his appreciation to the educators throughout our state who have quickly adapted their instruction to remote learning platforms.

“These are unprecedented times in Utah’s and our nation’s history,” the governor said, “I have been overwhelmed with Utahns’ outpouring of support for one another, and nowhere has this been more evident than in the way our educators are supporting Utah students and families.”

Distance learning will continue during the extended dismissal for all K-12 public schools, where feasible…

“We recognize that being away from school creates additional work and stress for everyone in our communities; however, it is a necessary step in stopping the spread of COVID-19,” said State Superintendent Sydnee Dickson. “During the uncertainties of the coming weeks, it is more important than ever to remain socially connected with our students and families while doing our best to ensure learning continues. The flexibility and initiative of our educators is a shining example of how we rise together in challenging circumstances.”

Meal services at K-12 public schools will also continue on an as-needed basis.

Nebo School District teachers and staff remain committed to providing the learning structure and support that students and parents will require during these challenging times.  Our talented and dedicated professionals are so thankful to you students and parents for your tremendous efforts regarding at-home schooling.  Please remain in communication with your child’s teachers and contact the school with questions and concerns.

We are so grateful to live in amazing communities that rally around each other in difficult circumstances and are proud to be your partners in helping your children have academic and social/emotional success.

Sincerely,

Lana Hiskey

Nebo Students:

Thank you for your patience and support as we navigate through this unprecedented time in education. We just want to keep you updated on what is happening in Nebo School District.

For the past couple of days and even through the weekend, Nebo teachers have been in training and preparing online materials and/or packets for their students for “at home” instruction.

Students, you should be hearing from your teacher(s) about learning “at home” instructions and directions in the next day or two on how to proceed in your particular class. If you have not heard from your teacher by the morning of Friday, March 20, 2020, please notify your school.

School campuses will remain open for the next two weeks.
• Students can retrieve personal items.
• Students can pick up assignments from their instructors.
• Some instructors may be available for brief one-on-one tutoring.
• Instructors will help answer student questions about their assignments.

The safety and education of our Nebo students is paramount in everything we do and in every decision we make. Thank you for your partnership in education.

Every Friday, "Praise Notes" are read during morning announcements. These students are called to the office and get thier picture taken. Students can earn a "Praise Note" by being caught doing kind things throughout the school and classrooms.
