Hello Parents!

We extend a warm welcome to students, parents, and families of Sierra Bonita Elementary, Home of the Bears. We look forward to working with each member of our school community to achieve our school mission statement:

In partnership with parents and community, our mission at Sierra Bonita Elementary is to create high levels of learning for every student, celebrate individual differences and abilities, and inspire responsible citizenship and lifelong success.

I have been greatly impressed with all of our students and their willingness to come to school each day with a smile and with a positive attitude.  It is great that they respect the fact that we are required to wear masks and they do it without any complaint.  I also appreciate the steps each of you are taking to help ensure the safety of our school and to limit the spread of Covid 19.  Please continue to follow safe practices and continue to watch for symptoms with your child and within your family.  During these unique and challenging times, it is important that we work together to help provide the safety within our school for each of our students, staff and any visitors.  ALL adults who enter our building and go beyond the office need to have their temperature taken.  Even if it is for a moment.  We have adults able to help take a child to class or deliver something they need for the day, so please come into the office to get help.  During this upcoming school-year it is our commitment each day to emphasize our theme “Be a Light” with our students. As parents, “Be a Light” means creating positive experiences for our students, school and community as we work together to navigate this unique school year.  Thank you for your support for Sierra Bonita Elementary!

School Picture Day

Picture day is coming up on September 11th, so be ready to put on your best smile!

School Carnival Fundraiser

Due to restrictions with Covid 19, we have postponed our Carnival until the Spring!  Hopefully we will be able to enjoy this yearly tradition then.

PTA News:

If you have not had a chance to sign up for PTA and to help in the classroom please contact a member of the PTA board.

T-shirt orders are due by Friday, September 4th.

School Community Council Elections

We have three positions open for parent members of our SCC-School Community Council.  This is a great opportunity to help discuss ways to use our Trustland’s funds to help meet the needs of our students.  If you are interested in being placed on the ballot please email Amanda Shepherd @ amanda.shepherd [at] nebo.edu (amanda[dot]shepherd[at]nebo[dot]edu)  Names need to be submitted by September 15th.

Student Education Plan (SEP) Conferences and Sign-Ups

We are excited to share that we will be using Sign-Up Genius, an online tool for creating and managing group sign up lists, to sign up for our September 24th and December 3rd SEP conferences. (Our March 4th Student Led Conferences will be according to a different schedule).

A message will be sent to your email from the school through Parentlink that will provide a link and information on how to sign up using Sign-Up Genius. If you have any questions, please contact the school at 801-798-4480. Thank you! We will also be providing an opportunity to have an SEP conference via ZOOM.  Please contact your child’s teacher if you prefer to have your SEP conference virtually.

Pick-Up Zone & Parking

We appreciate the efforts of all parents and staff members in providing for the safety of students in our drop-off and pick up zones. Please help us to ensure that all students are accompanied by an adult when crossing through the pick-up zone.  Also, thank you for reserving our handicapped parking spaces for those who have need for these parking stalls. We remind you to please park in a parking stall if you need to leave your vehicles to come inside the school.  This allows the flow of the drop-off and pick-up areas to be maintained and keeps vehicles moving forward and not needing to back up!  We have great appreciation for everyone’s efforts to increase safety in our parking lots and drop off and pick-up zones before and after school.

Note: By law, bus zones cannot be used as drop off and pick up zones even if there are no buses present!

School Checkout Procedures

Please follow the following procedures when you need to check a student out from school before the end-of-school bell rings.  First, share with an office secretary that an early checkout is necessary, second, fill out information and sign name on the checkout sheet located in the office area, and third, wait in the office area until your student arrives in the office. Thank you.

End of School Day Checkout

We ask for your help in reducing the number of interruptions classes could experience at the end of the school day due to students being checked out early.  Our teachers are instructing right up to the end of each day, and it is increasingly difficult for them and the class when students are checked out early. Unless it is an emergency, we ask that students not be checked out during the last 15 minutes of the day.  This practice helped last year and will continue to help teachers and students to make the most of every minute of the day.

Thanks for all of your help in keeping our school safe by not coming into the halls and waiting for your student.  I think our student have been amazing at adjusting to this and have been great at finding their classrooms.  Please make sure you check in at the office before going down the halls.  All adults must get a temperature check to go beyond the office.

Students Walking, Riding Bicycles/Scooters & Crosswalks

We have many students who are walking and riding bicycles/scooters to school each day. We have provided training for students to use sidewalks and to follow the instructions of adult supervisors and our crossing guards. We have instructed students to use the crosswalk in front of the school when crossing 1800 East. Faculty members will serve as crossing guards at this crosswalk. We ask that all parents please instruct their children on these and other safety measures to better ensure that students safely make their way to and from school each day.

Spirit Day

We have school spirit at Sierra Bonita, and have designated each Friday as our School Spirit Day. We have nice school shirts and encourage children to wear their school shirts (this year’s and past years’ shirts) or school colors (blue and maroon) on Fridays.  We have a lot to be proud of at Sierra Bonita and want to do all we can to build school pride.
