Bear's Bulletin
February 2014

Schedule for Wednesday, February 5

Dear Parent,
This email is to notify you that due to the upcoming funeral/internment of Sgt. Cory Wride, all Spanish Fork secondary schools will be excused at11:15 a.m. and all Spanish Fork elementary schools will be excused at 12:00 noon this Wednesday, February 5.

AM Kindergarten hours will be according to the regular kindergarten schedule (9:00 – 11:15am).  PM Kindergarten will not be held on this day. Parents of AM kindergarten bus students, please see additional note coming home Tuesday.

Lunch for 1st – 6th grade students will be served beginning at 10:30am.

The Spanish Fork Police Department has advised Nebo School District that Main Street and 300 South will be closed from 1:00 p.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m., and Spanish Fork City anticipates significant traffic delays and traffic congestion that would interfere with students leaving school at the regularly scheduled time. This early-out schedule is being implemented in order to avoid confusion and concerns associated with significant traffic issues. We recognize that this may be an inconvenience for some families, but we feel this is a small adjustment to make in order to accommodate the needs of many during this difficult time.

All Spanish Fork schools will be excused early Feb. 5. Secondary excused at 11:15; Elementary at noon.

See www.nebo.edu for details.

Character Corner
During the month of February students will be learning about how to be a friend.  Please discuss the saying, “The only way to have a friend is to be one!” with your student.  We hope that by doing this that your student will seek good friends and be a good friend.  Also, we hope that you will encourage your child to spend time with those who set good examples.

Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Bash/ Book Fair Night will be held Wednesday, February 26, 2014, from 6:30-7:30pm. We invite all Sierra Bonita families and friends to attend. Bring your books, pillows, and blankets and join the fun with books and reading throughout the school. Our PTA book fair will be open, and teachers and volunteers will be sharing books throughout the school in a fun way. Popcorn will also be served. We look forward to seeing you at this event.

School Spelling Bee - On January 24, 2014 Sierra Bonita held its school wide 3rd grade spelling bee. We are very grateful to our two PTA representatives, Jana Cazier and Amy Rassmussen, as well as Mrs. Galt, the school’s curriculum coach, who volunteered to be on our panel of judges. Two representatives from each of our five classes were chosen to participate. All ten of these wonderful spellers came very prepared having obviously studied and practiced. Our 3rd grade classes were a great audience and very supportive of their classmates. The spellers were nervous yet confident. They did so very well which was evident in the many rounds they went through before anyone missed a word. We’d like to give big congratulations to Katelyn Gause who took 1st place, Brevan Anderson who took 2nd place, and Samuel VanDyk who took 3rd place. We are already looking forward to our 4th - 6th grade spelling bee which will take place on February 21st.  We would like to encourage all those students to prepare early for that great event.

National Anthem Celebration:  On Monday, February 3rd the school celebrated the 200th anniversary of the National Anthem.  The day began with the National Anthem being sung during morning announcements by Tami Pyfer, the Education Advisor to the Governor.  There was an assembly that morning where individual students, groups of students and faculty members participated in a program of music, visual arts, drama and dance.  Tami Pyfer then addressed the students as the keynote speaker.  It was a wonderful event, and we would like to give our appreciation to Janna Slye and Tiffany Manwaring as well as to the students, teachers, and staff that put so much work into making the program such a meaningful success.

February 26 – School Will Dismiss at 12:00 Noon - School will be held on Wednesday, February 26, for the morning only as the afternoon will serve as a District Development Day for teachers and staff members. Students 1st – 6th will be dismissed at 12:00 noon. Lunch will be served on this day beginning at 10:30am. AM Kindergarten hours will be according to the regular kindergarten schedule.  PM Kindergarten will not be held on this day.
